Orion’s ShortTube 80-T Compact Refractor is back by popular demand! This wide-field scope is equipped with a correct-image 45 degree diagonal and a correct-image 6 x 26 finder scope, providing you with a correctly oriented image for daytime terrestrial (hence the “-T” in 80-T) observing. You can pop it onto your favorite field tripod or telescope mount and take it to your favorite scenic landscape!
The ShortTube’s 15″ aluminum optical tube houses an 80 mm achromatic objective lens that is multi-coated for wonderful light transmission. You’ll enjoy a large field of view with its short 400 mm focal length (f/5) with incredibly high resolution. The oversized aluminum dew shield guards against moisture accumulation on the lens while also blocking off-axis glare, giving you better image contrast.
This refractor telescope comes machined with a 1.25″ cast-aluminum rack-and-pinion focuser, which has a dovetail finder scope show molded into the housing. The drawtube collar also features male T2 threads, which allows for attachment of a DSLR or mirrorless camera directly to the drawtube via a T-ring (sold separately) for prime focus photography.
You will also receive two interchangeable Sirius Plossl eyepieces – 25 mm and 10 mm – that deliver 16x and 40x magnifying power (respectively). These optics are multi-coated to provide bright images and their barrels are also threaded to accept optional Orion filters.
A dovetail mounting bar is preinstalled on the ShortTube 80-T, allows you to attach the telescope to any mount with a Vixen-style saddle or to any photo tripod with a 1/4″-20 threaded post, via one of the tapped holes in the bottom of the dovetail bar.
While the ShortTube 80-T refractor is designed specifically for terrestrial viewing, you are able to turn it skyward in the evening for a little stargazing. You can scan the Milky Way or observe the Moon in great detail.
